renovations, day 1 (hey, wait a minute...)

so a couple months ago our condo association won its long-running legal battle over construction defects. we stepped right smartly to get the defects remedied, and hired a contractor to start work yesterday. the letter that went out to all the residents last week said they'd be doing two units at a time, in reverse order, and that each set would take two weeks. (our complex is 4 duplex townhouses for a total of 8 units, plus one free-standing house. are you beginning to see a potential problem here?)
half an hour before i'm off work i get a call from lovely wife. they've started ripping the exterior wall off our unit. daughter is in tears in the background, frightened of the noise. lovely wife sounds a bit frazzled herself. i promise to come straight home.
home i go, to find that indeed, about 2/3 of the exterior of our longest wall has been removed. inquiry is delayed by ferrying daughter to dance class, but as soon as we're back we hunt down the officers of the homeowners' association.
words, it turns out, may have more than one meaning. (sarcasm, moi?) contractor may have interpreted "two units" as "two buildings", rather than "one building with two dwelling units". so as soon as the siding was removed from one "unit" they went on to the next, as planned.
so a compromise was reached - contractor is going to be asked to concentrate on the other side of our building (unit owned by one of the members of the board, who is a non-resident - this is her weekend house) for the next day or so, while we frantically pack away anything that might be damaged by what they're doing. and pack for move to in-laws' (thankfully currently empty) house, two weeks before planned.
oh, and did i mention lovely wife and lovely daughter have their last two days of school this week? so guess who's going to be scurrying like a proverbial chicken, tomorrow...
