axolotl9: (2006)
Woke up this morning to the sound of rain on the roof. It's a start. We still need more.

If it rained every day in February and March, we *might* be somewhere close to normal.

Santa Cruz County has one of the 17 communities that went on the list published a week ago of places that had an estimated 100 days of water left.

Flashing lightning! Crashing thunder! Rattling hail!

...and a cry of "Moooooooooooommmmmmmmyyyyyyyy!!!" from upstairs...

it's going to be a long night.

so anyone who bet on Brokeback Mountain being named Best Picture at the Big Trademarked Awards Show (name deleted to protect my bank account) just got brought back to reality with a mighty Crash.

For the first time in many years, I haven't seen a single one of the Best Picture nominees. I must be not going to the movies often enough. (All of them played in Santa Cruz, and at least three of them are still playing in Santa Cruz. I think the exception may be the winner...)

In other news, it started raining right around sundown. (Not that we actually saw the sun go down, mind you - it just did a slow fade from grey to black.) About an hour ago the National Weather service issued a Flash Flood Watch (first-level alert). Just now they upgraded it to a Flash Flood Warning. How glad am I that we no longer live at our old apartment, where the parking lot flooded every winter and one year, our storage unit also flooded (the parking lot was below average water level for a normal winter storm - for one like this there'd definitely be standing water on the lower levels of the building. at least we lived on the second floor...)

Not that there's been a really serious flood in Santa Cruz since 1955, thanks to the Army Corps of Engineers and their hefty levees. Of course, by putting up levees and ripping all vegetation out of the riverbed, they totally screwed up the ecology of the river, and it's just beginning a long recovery process (levees are still there, they're a fact of life, but they've stopped ripping out the vegetation every fall.).

i do enjoy the rain, though. rain is nifty.

oh, finally got back the snow pics from three weeks ago. will put some up with links, later this week. really. honest. ;)
