gooooooooooooo GIANTS!

and to the Patriots: you know, 18-1 is a perfectly respectable record.

Oh wait, except when that *one* is the Super Bowl. PWN3D!!!

i'm sorry, I had nothing personal riding on this game, but I did sort of really really want the Giants to win. Or maybe for the Patriots to lose. Tom Brady needs to experience *some* disappointment in his life...

it was a day of cooking, laundry and football. good mundane things to get my mind off of yesterday.

My grandmother died this morning.

so we went up to San Francisco today to see SF Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker." High time for darling daughter, now 8, to finally see it live anyway.

'Twas marvelous. The current production is set in San Francisco circa 1915. Clever establishing during the overture, using slides projected on a scrim.

Marvelous sets, costumes etc. A few bobbles in the set changes - there were at least 2 places where nothing was on stage except dancers, who appeared to be interacting with things that weren't there yet. (There was also a major malfunction of a practical prop, which was however quickly corrected.) I doubt any of the hundreds of kids that were there noticed. We cynical oldsters (hey, lovely wife and I both have degrees in theater arts) were slightly more picky.

Afterward, we dawdled around Union Square for a bit and then went for dinner at David's Deli. Yum. Ended up bringing an order of corned beef and rye back for mother-in-law (yes, we called from the deli and said "we decided to go to David's for dinner, you want anything?" or words to that effect.)

All in all, a good day.

after singing bedtime song to lovely daughter tonight:

"Daddy, I don't know how to tell you this, but you were a little off key."

i love her so...

so i get home today, finding an empty house. no sign of lovely wife & darling daughter. odd...

time goes by. still not there. moving past odd...

an hour later i'm really getting frazzled.

they just walked in. Tuesday night. dance class. i forgot.

(this is the way i react to recent events.)

so i got to meet my month-old niece today. cute kid. what a grip - she gets her fingers on something, it's going to take negotiations to get it back. thinks her rubber-faced uncle is pretty amusing.

my daughter was very excited to meet her new cousin (who is her only first cousin, and may be her only first cousin unless my sister changes her mind...). there should be some terminally cute pictures eventually.

So I'm an uncle now. BIG baby girl, almost 10 pounds.

this ought to be fun...

so my sister went into labor around noon today. a week past her "due date" but hey, first kid, who knows when they're going to show up. so sometime tonight or tomorrow i will be an uncle. very cool. apparently if it's a boy it will be named after my paternal grandfather, who died last year. and if it's a girl, there are more options.

i spent a sleepless couple of nights cursing at Amadeus II while using it to digitize some 78s of piano music that my wife's great-aunt recorded about 60 years ago. the resulting files were then burned to CD and sent along with my in-laws who visited the great-aunt in question today. i am apparently definitely on her good list now. (odd family connections - my wife's great-aunt was my dad's accompanist when he did solo voice back in college.)

in other silliness:
what kind of Republican am I? )

yeah, always knew i leaned a bit conservative for Santa Cruz.
