what a day

haven't had a Sunday off in a while. almost forgot what it's like to do weekendy things on an actual weekend...
this morning was the kids' Chanukah party for Temple School. Kids only for the first part, then parents were invited for the second bit. The teachers did a rather silly play which was a Chanukah story set in the town of Chelm. (For those not familiar, Chelm is a semi-mythical town in Poland populated exclusively by fools.) And there were latkes. (yum) and i got some dark chocolate gelt (which I still think should be silber rather than gelt 'cause that's the foil that it's wrapped in) which i can share with my dairy-allergic daughter. hurray for parve Israeli chocolates!
then off to the shoe store before returning home. an hour or two of decompression, then off to the second party of the day. this being the local Irish Society's winter ceilidh. one small problem...
the party was in a wood-framed, wood-paneled, wooden-floored A-frame. Very acoustically live. Great for the music however...
as i've gotten older and my hearing has deteriorated a bit (not helped by fireworks abuse and years of loud music), i find it harder to localize voices and/or sounds in a room. this becomes worse with the addition of more people. although there were maybe 12 people at this party at its height, that room was so live that it was making me disoriented. so i did the natural thing and fled.
ended up hanging out with the hosts' daughter, Anna, who it turns out has some congruence in entertainment tastes with me. so we geeked out for most of the party, discussing webcomics, TMBG and other good stuff. turns out we also know some of the same people (mostly through my wife's being a teacher - some of her former students go to the same school.) i made occasional appearances back on the main room to obtain food and/or beverage and make sure everyone knew where i was, but mostly i was back there.
so, new person on my friends list. ain't life grand?
