Nov. 11th, 2008 09:55 pm90th anniversary, today, of the armistice that ended hostilities on the "Western Front" (note, it was only Western to the Central Powers - Austria-Hungary, Germany and the Ottoman Empire). Not, as is commonly believed, the end of World War I. (Though for all practical purposes, aside from a few isolated units, the fighting ended at 11:00 Paris time on 11 November 1918)
If you haven't already (we had a moment of silence at work), stop and give a thought to those who have served.
I've a long list - 3 uncles who served in the Army, 2 uncles, an aunt and a cousin who served in the Navy, an uncle who served in the Marines. (The last being the only one who actually saw combat, as a helicopter pilot in a then-classified location in Southeast Asia. yep, he was there before 1964...) Two cousins currently in the Army, one of whom just deployed to somewhere Over There. One cousin in the Marines who, I hear, may be up for a second tour Over There. (Grandson of the Marine uncle, that one.)
thanks, all of you.
