home and deranged
Jan. 21st, 2006 05:38 pmSo our oven hasn't been working for... about a week and a half now. Major annoyance. I've fixed our stove before, though, so over to APED I went to get a new thermostat. (It's been dying for a while - it stopped self-cleaning around November.)
Oh darn, they don't have it in stock. Fine, then, I say. Can they order it?
A few taps on the computer screen later, it is revealed that their upstream provider doesn't have it in stock, either. No estimated delivery date available. Drat...
So I go over to Western Appliance to see how much a new stove might cost. (This one is 24 years old - a new one couldn't hurt.)
Here's the problem - it's a 27" drop-in electric range. There's not much demand for these, and there's basically only a single manufacturer. That would be General Electric.
You would not believe what the equivalent of our dinky little stove costs. Hint: I could probably buy two full-sized ranges for what one self-cleaning 27" drop-in electric range costs. If I'm willing to forego the self-cleaning (which I suppose isn't essential, though it's very handy), the price drops considerably but is still rather more than a full-sized range.
Of course, if we got a regular 30" range we'd have to lose some cabinets and re-do our countertops, which would also cost a bundle.
*grumble*
