Hello, World!

So today is my wife's birthday. Somewhere in all the other stuff I'm doing today, I need to make dinner reservations (oops) and wrap presents. That last part won't take too long, though - still lots of containerage left over from the recently past winter gift-giving season.

I'm tempted to get flowers, too. Not cut flowers, though. She loves roses, so I think I'll go to our favorite garden store and have a look at what's new & cool in climbing roses. Then again, the ground's still so swampy from the December deluge that maybe I'll just get her a rose certificate -- "good for one rosebush" -- and a single long-stemmed rose to go with.

What do y'all think?

Several years ago, I resolved to give up making New Year's resolutions. It's one that I've definitely managed to keep.

However, this was too cute to pass up:

In my opinion, it's a crock. But then, so are most so-called personality tests. I recall taking the MMPI back in high school - it suggested that one of my better job choices would be hairdresser. I don't think so...

Giving bureaucracy the bird

So just before "winter break" I went to the Santa Cruz County Office of Education to sign up as a substitute teacher. No, they said, you'll have to come back after the break, because there aren't any more LiveScan (fingerprinting) slots available.

So today, back I went. No, they said. Now you have to go get a TB test, because your last TB test was in 2001 and we only accept the results for four years.

They couldn't have mentioned this last month??!?
