two spaces will soon open on the comics pages

Johnny Hart, artist/writer of "B.C." and artist for "The Wizard of Id", apparently keeled over at his drawing table yesterday.

so in about a month, there ought to be two vacancies in most newspaper comic pages. (unless of course they pull a "Classics" maneuver as United Features has done with "Peanuts" - but I don't think either of those strips has the audience that "Peanuts" did/does.)

maybe, just maybe, some cartoonist whose sense of humor didn't ossify in the '70s can get a chance to have his (or maybe hers... although truthfully the only female newspaper cartoonist i can think of is *shudder* Cathy Guisewite) work displayed to a wider audience.

UPDATE: According to this MSNBC article, "B.C." and "The Wizard of Id" will continue, as they have "an extensive computer archive of Hart's drawings to work with." So, recycled art with probably recycled jokes as well. So much for getting my hopes up...

You certainly ought to know about Hilary Price, who writes Rhymes With Orange, and Lynn Johnston who writes For Better or For Worse...

That said, I've been much happier since I stopped relying on the newspaper for my newspaper comics. And a yearlong subscription to the syndicates online is a heck of a lot cheaper than the subscription to a newspaper I don't really want to read!

duh, yeah

although I don't read "Rhymes with Orange" on a daily basis.

posting while tired again...

One you may not know that gets published in my "local paper" (said paper being the "Stars and Stripes") on Sundays is Julie Negron - her strip is at http://www.jennyspouse.com

that's pretty amusing. 'course, it's not just that way for military spouses - my uncle Bob, after he left the Marines, got a job as a troubleshooter for Georgia Pacific - another 6 states in 10 years! (My aunt Sarah somehow always managed...)
