on an actual update note
so for the second year in a row, I'm participating in Mary McLaughlin's Cór Ainglí, singing Christmas songs (some familiar, others rather less so) in Irish Gaelic. I had great fun doing choral singing again last year, and have been looking forward to this.
first rehearsal was today, and one of the two songs that's "new" for this year is Oíche Chiunn, which is Silent Night, mostly (slightly different lyrics when translated into English). I say "new" because we closed the concert with it last year, except only Mary sang in Gaelic, with the rest of us singing it in English. We'd been rehearsing for a good hour and a piece and I was nice and warmed up, so I did as I did last year - sang it falsetto. Important differences: a) not in a church full of other people also singing, and b) standing right up front next to Mary. So much for blending in...
So anyway, she noticed. She asked if I'd like to try some of the other songs in that range as well. Hmmm.
On the one hand, I'm pretty proud of my range.
On the other hand, it ain't easy to hit those notes any more. Takes a lot of warm-up and a lot of water to keep the ol' larynx lubricated.
On the gripping hand... what? really? Of course I want to do this! The question is... is it really a good idea?
So I came home with the tenor part practice CD... and the mezzo-soprano part as well. I'm going to try a couple of these out and see if it's possible and practical.
Amusing addendum:
songspinner9 is also in the choir (this is her third year), and she's assigned to the tenor section because tenors are always hard to come by. So if I do this, there will be some songs where I'm singing with the mezzos and she's singing with the tenors.
